Somali Lawmaker Levels Clan-Based Promotion Allegations Against Hassan Sheikh’s Government

Somali lawmaker Sareedo Mohamed Abdalla has strongly criticized the current conditions facing Somalia’s armed forces, claiming that some soldiers and officers who have served the country for many years have not received the promotions they are entitled to.

Sareedo alleged that clan-based considerations have influenced the military promotion system, stating:

“Ranks are not being awarded based on merit; they are being given on the basis of clan. There are soldiers who have spent 20 years defending the country and have received no promotions.”

She also said that serious problems exist within the armed forces, describing the situation as one involving “humiliation and a disaster,” and called for the restoration of the National Defence Law.

The lawmaker stressed that soldiers and officers who have served the country for extended periods should receive their rightful benefits, promotions, and proper support.

Sareedo further called for greater rights and support for members of the armed forces, describing their current circumstances as deeply concerning.

Her remarks come amid ongoing discussions over military reform, the promotion system, and efforts to build a professional national army governed by clear rules and defined personnel rights.
