Hassan Sheikh Plunged Into Deep Political Crisis as Electoral Deadline Nears

Diplomatic sources and individuals closely monitoring Somalia’s political landscape say President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to present a final political agreement before the end of July, aimed at guiding the country’s federal electoral process.

According to these sources, the main challenge facing the initiative is the difficulty of reaching a comprehensive consensus among all relevant political stakeholders. The president is said to remain committed to strengthening a multi-party system, while opposing any return to a non-party-based electoral model.

Meanwhile, the Villa Somalia administration is reportedly prioritizing the organisation of regional elections in Galmudug and Hirshabelle. These polls are expected to be conducted in a manner similar to previous electoral processes in Mogadishu and Baidoa, where indirect political arrangements were implemented.

Following the completion of these regional processes, the federal government is expected to engage with administrations it recognises as legitimate federal member states. However, political analysts say significant challenges remain, particularly regarding the inclusion and influence of opposition groups, which continue to play a notable role in the country’s political dynamics.

Somalia is therefore entering a sensitive political phase during July and August, with key decisions anticipated that could shape the trajectory of the federal electoral process and the country’s broader political future.
