EXPOSED: Electoral Committee Accused of Aiding Minister Jama in “Seizing” Parliamentary Seat

Some members of both Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, who have referred to themselves as the “Independent Parliament,” have strongly criticized the election of seat HOP#204, describing it as a process that violated the country’s laws and constitution.

In a press statement issued by the lawmakers, they alleged that the seat, previously held by Isaaq Cali Subag, was unlawfully transferred to the Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama.

The statement emphasized that the move contravenes provisions of the Provisional Constitution, particularly Article 59, and reflects interference and a disregard for the country’s legal framework.

The lawmakers also criticized the electoral committee responsible for conducting the process, stating that the manner in which the election was handled demonstrates a failure to adhere to principles of governance and legal order.

“This issue is a clear example of how far the electoral committee has strayed from proper state-building practices, and how it has failed to uphold the law and ensure electoral transparency,” the statement said.

Furthermore, the lawmakers argued that the election held in the city of Baidoa does not comply with the country’s legal requirements, calling for the immediate nullification of its outcome.

Finally, they urged the Somali public and government institutions to stand up for the protection of the constitution and the rule of law, and to resist any actions that undermine the country’s state-building process.
