Villa Somalia Weighs Political Measures Amid Reported Rift With South West President

Sources say the presidency at Villa Somalia is considering a series of political steps amid an apparent rift with the president of South West State, Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed (Laftagareen).

Officials familiar with the discussions say several figures within the Federal Government of Somalia, some believed to be politically opposed to Laftagareen, have been informed of directives that could be implemented in the coming days.

Among the measures reportedly under consideration is the transfer of customs control in the town of Afgooye to the federal government, a move sources say could affect revenue streams linked to the regional capital, Baidoa.

Sources also say federal officials currently stationed in Baidoa have been instructed to return to Mogadishu within days, warning that those who fail to comply could face dismissal from their posts.

In addition, members of parliament, senators and other officials from South West State who are based in Mogadishu may face restrictions on travelling to areas under the regional administration, according to the sources.

The reported measures come amid growing political tensions between the federal government and the leadership of South West State.

There has been no immediate comment from the Federal Government of Somalia or the office of President Laftagareen regarding the claims.
