Fear of Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo Comeback Allegedly Sparks Federal Moves Against Southwest
A government minister has delivered a sharp rebuke of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, casting doubt on his prospects of returning to power as political tensions continue to mount ahead of future elections.
Abdiqadir Mohamed Nur, Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, said that parliamentary support allegedly mobilized for Farmaajo from the Southwest State would not be enough to secure his return to the presidency. He described such ambitions as unrealistic and unlikely to materialize.
“Farmaajo, even with the MPs reportedly secured for you from Southwest, you will not become president again, God willing,” the minister said in a strongly worded statement, adding that the political momentum behind the former leader would soon dissipate.
The remarks come at a time of increasing friction between current and former political leaders, as Somalia navigates a sensitive political period marked by preparations for upcoming elections and ongoing power struggles.
Minister Nur is considered a close ally of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, whose term is nearing its end. He has held multiple government positions under the current administration, most recently serving as Minister of Ports and Marine Transport.
Political analysts say such rhetoric underscores the deepening divisions within Somalia’s political landscape, warning that escalating tensions could trigger further instability if not addressed through dialogue and consensus-building.
